Improvement Plan

English 163
Since the data is more favorable and clearly points out that students in this course is making significant gains in their reading levels, there aren't too many changes recommended for this course at this time. However, this does not mean that improvements are not needed.

English 162
There is a need to pay close attention to this course and improve the students' reading levels. Since this study, a few changes have already been put into place:
  1. The Reading program has a dedicated Course Coordinator now. This person has started to bring about more consistency.
  2. The Course Coordinator has been meeting with faculty teaching the course and evaluating syllabi to make sure that instructors are teaching the skills as stipulated in the course outline.
  3. Common textbooks have also been established for all sections of this course.
Future plans:
  1. The common textbook idea has to be evaluated.
  2. There has been talks of a common final or items in the final exam that can test for specific skills across the sections.
  3. Changing the approach from teaching skills in an isolated environment vs teaching the skills within the context of content area texts, so students can be better prepared for college-level reading.
Another Suggestion but more dialogue needed
Reinstate English 161, which was a reading course before English 162 in the series. This will ensure that students who take the placement test, do not go into English 162 by default. The students with very low reading grade levels need more time to develop their skills, so it can be done better with a 3-course series rather than just two.
